The affirmative defense of fair use of a copyrighted work is a complex and commonly misunderstood legal doctrine. This course, presented by Max Beaulieu, Esq, Isaro Carter, Esq, and David Jeffries, Esq.  will discuss this complex doctrine and the specific issues concerning fair use in music. The CLE will be moderated by Madjeen G. Bonneau.

The lecture will walk through the underlying public policy which gave rise to the fair use doctrine and each step of a proper fair use analysis, debunk common misconceptions which surround fair use in music, and review important cases that have helped shape the fair use doctrine.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the fair use doctrine and its place in copyright law
  2. Review the fair use doctrine with respect to music
  3. Identify important cases concerning the fair use doctrine and music
  4. How music lyrics are used in criminal case.
